Here I am, Have Your Way

Original Song my Mahi

From the early years of my conversion, my delight in God’s word has always been rooted and driven by my desire to know him more. Every word and deed from him triggered a response from me to praise him, to worship him, or simply sit in silent awe of his presence.

Those moments taught me that the God who spoke through Scripture also listens and responds in the now.

It’s not just a relationship that is based on who God was in some distant past, or even some abstract concept of who I think he will be like in the future, but in the constant nature of who he is now and always. This led me to have freedom in his presence, to know him as he truly is, and who he wants me to be.

I picked up my instrument one day, as I do often, longing to sing to my Savior. After spending some time in worship, I began singing the words to this song. As I sang the words, “All you want, is for me, to surrender all; all you have given me, willingly,” I felt and sense of favor and privilege to be in his sight and could not take for granted the blessing and kindness he is bestowing on me.

All that I kept repeating after that was, “Here I am, Have your way.” I knew there was no other fitting response than stating my joy to be in his presence, as I surrendered myself to his will. I went on to declare that he is worthy of honor and exaltation for there is no one like him, and that as my King, he should reign over me.

In times like these, the sequence of words in my songs becomes a journey that my heart takes with him.

There was a tangible presence of his overwhelming love, peace, and joy that prompted the words, “I’ll never know, something more beautiful, than your presence surrounding me.” I acknowledged him as the source of peace and love that overflows from within me.

In reflection, after completing this song, I thought of the many men and women from the Bible who also responded to God in the same manner, saying, “Here I am, have your way.” People like Abraham, whom God spoke to as a friend while working out his divine plan for his life. Abraham’s obedience and willingness to give up his only son was a foreshadowing of the sacrifice that God himself would later provide for the world through Jesus Christ. Abraham's grandson, Jacob, had a similar response when God appeared to him in a dream. Jacob said, “Here I am,” and would go on to father the 12 tribes of Israel that God made into a nation.

These were more than momentary responses to God, for they didn’t stop at words, but became fulfilled promises that remained alive throughout generations.

There was also Moses, whose response led the Israelites from captivity to freedom as they went on to inherit the Promise Land. The young boy Samuel responded to his name being called at a time when the light of the temple was put out and the word of the Lord was scarce. He would grow to be a mouthpiece for God to shape a people who were surrounded with so much corruption. When the prophet Isaiah heard God ask, “Who shall we send, who will go for us?” he responded without hesitation, “Here I am Lord, send me.” He went on to record countless prophecies about the coming Messiah and future events yet to be fulfilled. When an angel appeared to the virgin Mary and told her she would give birth to the Son of God, she simply said, “May your word to me be fulfilled,” which was her way of saying, “Here I am, Have your way.” When God sent Ananias to pray for Paul’s scales to fall from his blind eyes and declare him God’s choice instrument, the man of God simply responded, “Here I am.”

So many more have responded and have become a part of God’s will being done on Earth as it is in Heaven. As such, our response should be the same if we long to see true peace in the world we are living in. We are the ones that should be in the throne room of Christ and running out with the herald of the King’s banner of love, obeying what he calls us to do, no matter the cost. It is worth our very existence, even though we may not know the details of it until the end of time.
